Botzer Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. May 22, 2020 – Wake Forest men's tennis junior Bar Botzer was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District, as announced by the organization on Thursday.

Botzer, a finance major who holds a 3.85 cumulative GPA after three years at Wake Forest, was one of 10 members of the District III Academic All-District first team.

The Tel Aviv, Israel native played out of the No. 1 singles spot this season and was as high as No. 15 in the ITA Singles Rankings this season.

On the top court, he finished the dual match season with an 8-3 record and was riding a five-match win streak before the season was cut short.

Botzer helped make himself known early on in his Demon Deacon career when he provided the clinching point in the National Championship match against Ohio State in 2018. Playing out of the No. 4 position, Botzer climbed back from 5-2 down in the second set to win 6-4, 7-5.

After being named to the All-District Team, Botzer is now up for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, which are set to be announced from June 16-19.

Five Lobos Earn All-America Honors for Indoor Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  May 26, 2020 — While the NCAA Indoor Championships were not able to take place at the Albuquerque Convention Center back in March, the USTFCCCA has proceeded with announcing All-America honors for the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field season on Tuesday.

Unlike in typical years where first- and second-team distinctions were determined by finish at the NCAA Championships, the NCAA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee adopted the following criteria for this unique instance:

Based on the post-medical scratches start list for the national championships posted on Wednesday, March 11 at 9:24 p.m., local, the following will be recognized as All-America for the 2020 indoor track & field season:

Individual events: ALL student-athletes listed on the start list for the anticipated event.

Relay events: The four student-athletes per anticipated relay who produced the performance that was declared and accepted into their event. Those listed as alternates will not be recognized.

Additionally, there will not be a distinction of "first-team", "second-team", or "honorable mention" to these recognitions.

As a result, five Lobos were awarded All-American status in Weini Kelati, Emily Martin, Abigail Bendle, Adva Cohen (Jerusalem, ISRAEL and on far right above) and Elise Thorner. Cohen, Thorner, Bendle and Kelati were the four entries on the DMR (distance medley relay) team that qualified for the championship, while Martin earned it for the 5000-meters. Furthermore, Kelati was one of 10 women who earned three All-America distinctions after qualifying in the 3000-meters, 5000-meters and DMR.

MIT Track and Field Earns 24 USTFCCCA Indoor All-America Honors

New Orleans, LA (May 29) -- All-America honors for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field season were recently announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). MIT's men's and women's teams combined for 24 All-America accolades this season, which ranks the Engineers in a tie for fifth nationally as MIT is one of just 10 schools with 20 or more honors.

Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded to student-athletes who score any portion of a team point (top-eight in the final of an individual event or as a member of a top-eight placing relay event) at the NCAA Championships.

In lieu of conduction of the national championship this season, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA Division III Executive Committee adopted the following criteria:

Based on the selected participants for the national championships initially announced by the NCAA on Sunday, March 8, that group will be recognized as All-America for the 2020 Indoor Track & Field season:

Individual events: ALL student-athletes declared and initially accepted into their event.

Relay events: Members of ALL relays who produced the performance that was declared and initially accepted into their event.

Junior Yorai Shaoul (Raanana, Israel), a two-time NCAA Champion in the triple jump, qualified in both the triple jump and long jump. He was seeded sixth in the triple jump at 48 feet, nine inches and 20th in the long jump at 23 feet, 2.75 inches.

               Shay Doron, University of Maryland

Editor's note:  In the last issue of this newsletter (April 2020) I inadvertantly left out women's basketball player Shay Doron from the listing of the top Israeli college athletes of all time.

Doron (Ramat Hasharon, ISRAEL) played a pivotal role in the resurgence of the University of Maryland women's basketball program. With her help, the team made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including Maryland's first ever national title in 2006 with a victory over Duke University.

Doron holds several school records, and ranks in University of Maryland's top 10 in field goal attempts, assists, steals, three-pointers, and three-point attempts. She also started and played in more games than any other player in school history, with 134 appearances and 119 starts. Doron was named to the All-ACC third team in 2004, All-ACC first team in 2005, and All-ACC second team and ACC All-Academic team in 2006. She was also named to the U.S. National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Doron majored in criminal justice and criminology at Maryland. She played in the WNBA briefly for the New York Liberty and continues to play in the Israeli women's professional league today.
