Botzer Secures All-America Honors with NCAA Round of 32 Victory

Bar Botzer rallied from a set down to secure his first-ever All-America accolade

ORLANDO, Fla. – Wake Forest sophomore Bar Botzer (Tel Aviv, ISRAEL) became the ninth player in program history to be named a singles All-American on Tuesday (May 21), when the 50th-ranked Botzer rallied from a set down to defeat Ole Miss' Tim Sandkaulen in the Round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championship.

It is the first All-America nod for Botzer, who joins Petros Chrysochos and Borna Gojo as Demon Deacons to garner the honor in 2019.

It was a closely contested match between Botzer and the 52nd-ranked Sandkaulen, as Tuesday's battle featured a total of three breaks.

Sandkaulen struck first, breaking Bozter's first service game to take a 2-0 lead. The break would hold as Botzer would go on to drop the opening set, 4-6.

The two players matched each other throughout the second set which featured no breaks. Botzer was nearly broken twice in the set, holding on deuce points for 4-all and then again for 6-all, forcing a second-set tiebreaker. Tied at three in the tiebreaker, Botzer went on to win the final four points to claim a 7-3 victory and push the match to a decisive third set.

This time it was Botzer who struck early, breaking Sandkaulen for a 2-0 lead in the third. Leading 5-2, Botzer broke his opponent one more time to close out the 6-2 victory, clinching a spot in the Round of 16.

In Wednesday's Round of 16, Botzer had to withdraw from the tournament after sustaining a foot injury in his previous match.

Daniel Cukierman, University of Southern California

ORLANDO, FLA. May 21, 2019 — USC junior Brandon Holt will be the lone Trojan soldier engaged in NCAA action from here, after another hot and busy day out at the USTA National Campus for NCAA Round of 32 competition. Holt opened his day with a powerful singles win, but fell in doubles with partner Riley Smith later in the day. Senior Tanner Smith and sophomore Daniel Cukierman (Tel Aviv, ISRAEL), meanwhile, both had their debut NCAA Singles runs cut short with Round of 32 losses today in Orlando, Fla.   In his Round of 32 singles match, sophomore Daniel Cukierman clashed with an upset-minded Sam Riffice of Florida. Ranked #54 in the nation, Riffice had dispatched #20 Johannes Schretter in yesterday's opening round. Up against #24 Cukierman, the Gator kept up his momentum and captured a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Trojan. That loss capped Cukierman's sophomore season and NCAA Singles debut run with the sophomore gripping a powerful 34-11 overall singles record.
